Books have always transported me to a world the author created. My favorite types of books are those that give just enough detail for the reader to create a picture in their mind but then let the mind run wild and fill in the white space with as much or as little detail as the reader wishes. That is the goal with every one of my books.
One of my favorite questions to ask is "How do you imagine the characters - what do they look like?" Sometimes they are exactly as I pictured them when writing. More often their description of the character differs from mine and I find that both interesting and fascinating. Different people can read the exact same book and come up with very different versions of the characters. The largest compliment I can receive is that when people are discussing the book they talk about the characters and say 'That's not at all how I pictured him/her/them!!!!'
I came to the writing scene much later in life. I've always wanted to write a novel, but life always got in the way. It wasn't until an extended recovery from surgery and many days laying in bed healing that sparked the story line for my first novel. I would dream about it every night and in the morning I would write down the ideas from the dream. They were all over the place. As I wrote each chapter, the characters came alive. I found myself smiling as I wrote about certain people. I wanted to cheer them on as they faced the challenges in front of them. For others I had a scowl on my face as I wrote the chapter because the person evoked negative emotions.
I hope that you will enjoy the stories and characters as much as I do writing them for you to enjoy.
My approach is simple.
First and foremost are relatable characters. The people in my books are always modeled after people I have met in life. Sometimes they are people I love and others are people that if I don't meet up with them again I would be ecstatic. When you are reading I want you to say that sounds exactly like *fill in person you know here*.
Second, make sure 'they never see it coming'. One of my favorite reactions from my first book was when the person reading it came barging into the room holding the book telling me 'YOU CAN'T DO THAT!!'
Lastly, keep them wanting more. Every page should reveal something new. Several readers have told me 'If you don't write the follow up book I will hunt you down'. I know that they had no ill intentions but it made me realize how people connected with my writing. It drives me to write the next book. I hope you'll feel the same.
